Portsmouth covers a significant portion of Aquidneck Island and the neighboring islands. It is surrounded by the ocean and covered in rolling green farmland, parks, and peaceful neighborhoods. 

Numerous roads connect Portsmouth to Middletown and Newport on the south on Aquidneck Island. Portsmouth is also connected to the mainland by the Mount Hope Bridge and the Fall River Expressway.

Portsmouth has a long history that dates back to its settlement in 1638. It was one of the four colonies that merged to create Rhode Island. Anne Hutchinson helped found the settlement, making her one of the first women to found a colony in the New World.

The Battle of Rhode Island took place in Portsmouth in 1778 and this area is now a national historic landmark. Other historic sites in Portsmouth include Borden Farm, which dates back to the 1700s. Greenvale Farm and Oak Glen house were both built in the 1800s.

Portsmouth Recreational Activities & Attractions

Outdoor activities are popular in Portsmouth, RI thanks to its numerous marinas, golf courses, and parks. Portsmouth is home to the headquarters of US Sailing and the Newport International Polo Series. Other popular sports include swimming, hiking, soccer, and lacrosse.

The Aquidneck Club is a prestigious golf and sporting club in Portsmouth. Members can enjoy the golf course, tennis courts and equestrian club and take part in watersports. The Montaup Country Club also has an 18-hole course that is open year-round.

Sailing enthusiasts will find recreational boating facilities at the marina in Melville and Safe Harbour Island Park. You can dock boats here and take advantage of the boat building and repair services. 

Other attractions include the Green Animals topiary gardens, Newport Car Museum, several local vineyards, and numerous farm stands where you can buy fresh produce or pick your own seasonal fruits. Portsmouth also has a great selection of restaurants, cafes, and bars.

Portsmouth for Families

Portsmouth is known for its excellent public and private schools. Portsmouth High School ranks fourth in Rhode Island for its academic and extracurricular programs. Top-rated private schools include The Pennfield School and Portsmouth Abbey School.

Families will find plenty of activities for children in Portsmouth. Young people can enroll in sailing or tennis lessons, join storytelling sessions at the local library, or learn how to ride horses at the Nora Harris Equestrian center. Little ones will also love the hayrides and maze at Escobar Farm.
