It was named after Barrington, Somerset, where many of the English settlers originally came from.
Once considered the homeland of Massasoit and the Wampanoag Tribe, the land now known as Barrington is part of Bristol County, RI and lies just nine miles southeast of Providence. Surrounded by water on 3 sides - there is no point in Barrington more than two miles from salt water.
Its wharf overlooks the Barrington/Warren River, historically important for shellfishing, however, recreational boating now dominates over commercial fishing activities on the waterfront.
