Tiverton was originally incorporated into the colony of Massachusetts in 1694. However, this area along the east side of Narragansett Bay was hotly contested. In 1747, Tiverton and a number of neighbouring towns were annexed and incorporated into Rhode Island.

In the early days, Tiverton’s economy was mostly supported by farming, fishing and boat construction. Menhaden oil, a fish derivative, was manufactured in Tiverton until 1900. As early as 1827, wool and cotton mills also supported Tiverton's economy.

The coast of Tiverton can be very windy, which makes it ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Fogland Beach is the best spot for these sports because it has a long, wide bay that gets great gales and offers spectacular views of the Sakonnet River and Portsmouth.

Hikers will find plenty of trails to explore in and around Tiverton. Weetamoo Woods is awash in oak trees and has over seven miles of trails. The Audubon Emilie Ruecker Wildlife Refuge and the Saponet Marsh are both great bird-watching spots.

For shopping and dining, Tiverton Four Corners is a quaint historic village with stores housed in18th century buildings. Must-visit spots include Gray's for homemade ice cream and Evelyn's clam shack for seafood such as stuffies (Rhode Island-speak for stuffed quahogs) and lobster chow mein.
