Most of the historic buildings are in Wickford Village, which contains an impressive collection of houses dating back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries — most likely the largest concentration of colonial houses in such a small area in the nation

North Kingstown’s location on the ocean and in the midst of Rhode Island gives it easy access to a number of locations in the region. Providence is less than an hour away by car. Boston is about two hours away and New York City is a four-hour drive. There is also a fast ferry to Martha’s Vineyard.

North Kingstown Recreational Activities & Attractions

Because of its natural harbor and beaches, North Kingstown is famous as a summer resort and haven for pleasure boats. Sailors can cruise around Narragansett Bay and the sheltered coves. Beach lovers can suntan and swim at North Kingstown Town Beach, Blue Beach and Compass Rose Beach.

Kids will love the Rhode Island Biomes Marine Biology Center where they can learn about local sea creatures at the hands-on aquarium. Casey’s Farm is another family-friendly spot. The 300-year-old farm offers summer camps for kids and partners with schools to teach students how to raise and hatch chicks.

If you’re interested in history, Smith’s Castle was built in 1678 and is now a museum where guides give tours in period costumes. You can also visit the Gilbert Stuart Museum to see the birthplace of the artist who painted the George Washington image that is on the US one dollar bill.
