Check out Portsmouth homes and you'll notice boat building is a major industry here, and areas such as Melville have developed commercial, industrial, and recreational boating facilities. At the Melville small boat basin, for example, a 340-slip marina and boat building complex has replaced the Naval docking and PT-boat training facility. US Sailing, the National Governing Body of Sailing in the U.S., is also headquartered in Portsmouth. Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems department is a major employer here.
Portsmouth's history is one of bravery and revolutionary thinking. Settled in 1638, Portsmouth was the second settlement in the area. As leader of the settlement, Anne Hutchinson was the first woman to found a community in the New World. During the Revolutionary War, one of the most daring captures took place in Portsmouth when General Richard Prescott, the British Commander-in-Chief, was captured by Colonel William Barton of Rhode Island. This capture took place in the Overing House on West Main Road and is now marked with an historical plaque.
Portsmouth Condos & Landmarks
Portsmouth condos are not far from some other key historical landmarks including Founders Brook, the landing site of the first settlers from Boston, led by John Clark and William Coddington, in 1638. The Portsmouth Compact, used to govern Portsmouth as a democracy, is inscribed on a bronze and stone marker. As well, Hessian Hole, where the famous Battle of Rhode Island, took place, is now home to Carnegie Abbey Club, a private, 450-acre sporting estate offering golf, tennis, horseback riding, and both marina and luxury residences.
