Coloinial style homes started out as two-story structures with one room per floor. Eventually, they became more grand with a, four-over-four design most commonly seen today.  Like historic Colonials, contemporary Colonials have a front door in the middle of the house, two windows on each side of the door and five, second-story windows set symmetrically across the front facade.

Colonial Home Characteristics

Symmetry is a dominant design element in Colonial homes. They are usually square or slightly rectangular.  If there's a single chimney, it's in the middle of the roof.  Colonials with double chimneys have one on either side of the house. Across the second floor, the windows are all the same size and one is directly above the entry door with two to the left and two to the right. Inside, the stairway is directly behind the entry door leading to a hallway that divides the second story into two equal sections.
